Equestrian Fabrics for Horse Wear and Stable Products
Equestrian fabrics need to perform around the conditions horses and equipment face in everyday use — from outdoor weather and repeated movement to abrasion, tearing and moisture. Yi Chun develops technical fabrics for turnout rugs, stable blankets, fly sheets, coolers and other equestrian applications, with the construction and finishing adjusted around the requirements of the finished product.
Outdoor Protection Is Only Part of the Requirement
For turnout rugs and other outdoor horse wear, keeping rain out is only one part of fabric performance. The material may also be exposed to repeated movement, rubbing, snagging and changes in weather over extended periods of use.
Ripstop constructions can help limit the spread of tears after the fabric is snagged or punctured, while coating or lamination influences water resistance and moisture transfer. Depending on the application, hydrostatic head, breathability and tear strength can therefore be evaluated together rather than treating waterproof performance as the only requirement.
From Turnout to Stable Use
- Turnout Rugs & Outdoor Horse Wear — Fabrics may need to balance water resistance, breathability, tear strength and durability during repeated outdoor use.
- Stable Blankets, Fly Sheets & Coolers — Different constructions can be developed around weight, airflow, comfort and the level of protection required for the intended use.
- Travel & Protective Equipment — Travel boots, leg wraps and transport-related products may place greater emphasis on abrasion resistance, repeated movement and durability.
- Saddle & Stable Accessories — Saddle pad backing, stable covers and related products can require different combinations of strength, cleanability and surface performance.
Fabric Requirements Change With the End Use
The right construction depends on how and where the finished product will be used. Outdoor horse wear may require a balance of water resistance, breathability, tear strength and weather resistance, while stable and transport products can place greater emphasis on abrasion, repeated movement and ease of maintenance.
Depending on the application, Yi Chun can adjust the base fabric, denier, ripstop or Oxford construction, coating and lamination around the required performance. Relevant properties can then be evaluated using the test methods specified for the project.
